August 21st Meeting

President Mindy introduced Mark Ryder, Executive Director and Meghan Smith, Development Coordinator of the Morrison Center located at 60 Chamberlain Road in Scarborough. (Thanks to the AAA for assisting Mark who had locked himself out of his car just in time!)

From www.morrison-maine.org : “Morrison Center is a private, not-for-profit agency and a member of the Greater Portland United Way. We specialize in the support and development of children and adults with and without disabilities. We offer a broad range of day programs and services that support individuals and their families and encourage maximum growth and independence.” Bottom line is they provide birth to death support to persons with disabilities.

Mark stressed the different environment that exists today compared to the 50’s when many similar individuals were locked within the confines of the Pineland Center which was forced to eventually close as a result of shameful conditions. Named after their first executive director, Betty Morrison, today’s facility is a beautiful modern structure complete with pool, gym, and a green house. A wonderful video illustrated the many aspects their programs.

It was noted that their roots were with service clubs as the Westbrook Kiwanis Club that was supportive of the Cumberland County Cerebral Palsy Center which eventually became the Morrison Center.

They are supported directly and indirectly by the Department of Education and school districts that pay the majority of their fees. In addition they receive support from sections 21 & 29 for adults.

Candy raved about their “Mix & Mingles” which they host for area group homes on a monthly basis. Candy and her husband anticipate becoming active volunteers. Presently, they have 25 active volunteers who read, teach skills, and assist with their seedling program.
