For the first time our District is participating in a Friendship Exchange. We will travel to India at our own expense and then home-stay and sightsee with our Rotarian hosts from District 3060 in Western India.

Our departure is scheduled for January 4, 2011 with return on January 18, 2011.  Travel dates may be extended on your own beyond the 18th to allow for personal travel to other regions of India.

Your costs will include airfare (currently @ $1300 RT), Visa to India ($73), travel insurance and personal expenses.  Our Rotary hosts will provide food, lodging and sightseeing.

District 3060 includes the state of Gujarat, and is in the westernmost part of India.  The state includes major sights of Indus Valley Civilization.  While there we will visit, among other sites, the famous AJANTA and ELLORA CAVES.

AJANTA is one of the world's greatest historical monuments,  recognized by UNESCO, near the Jargon city of Maharashtra, India. There are 30 caves in Ajanta of which several are chaitya-grihas and the rest are monasteries. These caves were discovered in AD 1819 and were built up in the earlier 2nd century BC-AD. Most of the paintings in Ajanta are right from 2nd century BC-AD and some of them about the fifth century AD and continued for the next two centuries. All paintings show heavy religious influence and center around Buddha, Bodhisattvas, and incidents from the life of Buddha and the Jatakas. The paintings are executed on a ground of mud-plaster in the tempera technique.

The Ellora Caves are an impressive complex of Buddhist, Hindu and Jain cave temples built between the 6th and 10th centuries AD near the ancient Indian village of Ellora. The caves have a slightly less dramatic setting than those at Ajanta, but more exquisite sculptures. Ellora is a World Heritage Site and the most visited ancient monument in Maharashtra State.

The District 7780 Rotary Friendship Exchange program gives Rotarians and their partners the opportunity to host and visit Rotarians in Gujarat, India. In addition to experiencing this fascinating culture and making lasting friendships, our exchange program provides a strong foundation for international service projects.
